Gothenburg-based luxury art rug brand Henzel Studio have organised a charity rug auction on Paddle8 from which all proceeds will be going to the international nonprofit organisation GoodWeave. The online auction will be on 9-23 January and will feature 23 of Henzel Studio’s most stunning designs created as part of the firm’s Collaborations/Heritage projects.
For several years Henzel have been working with some of the leading names in contemporary art to create innovative carpets and this Paddle8 auction will feature many of these designs including rugs by Marilyn Minter, Richard Prince, Helmut Lang, Anselm Reyle, Linder, avaf, Nan Goldin, Richard Phillips and Juergen Teller. There will be a new artist designed rug by Wilhelm Sasnal, to be unveiled for this auction and the rug that adorned our most popular front cover, by Linder, will also be part of the sale.
The Swedish company’s recent Henzel Studio Heritage project with The Andy Warhol Foundation of Visual Arts features in the latest COVER magazine (issue 45, Winter 2016),where we highlight some of the best rugs that Henzel have produced from Warhol’s work. A selection of these designs will also feature in the auction alongside a previous collaboration with the Tom of Finland Foundation. All rugs on sale will be accompanied by artist signed certificates of authenticity.
Joakim Andreasson, curator for Henzel Studio comments: “Art rugs have been around for quite some time in various forms, and some of the most prominent artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso have all turned to the media at some point in their oeuvre. However, rather than look back, we’re looking to encapsulate facets of contemporary art and work with a curated group of artists that simultaneously express their ethos within a broad yet defined scope. Having more than fifteen leading contemporary artists collaborate in this capacity makes Henzel Studio Collaborations an unprecedented program, even though the artisan practices remind us that the possibility has always been there.”
The auction will start on Monday 9 January and will last for two weeks. The money raised will go towards GoodWeave, who work towards ending child labour within the carpet industry.
