NYCxDESIGN is the official name of New York’s design week, which this year was on 8-19 May. With its second annual edition happening on 15-18 May 2015, Sight Unseen OFFSITE is an exciting design event that coincides with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) and NYCxDESIGN. Produced and curated by Monica Khemsurov and Jill Singer of online magazine Sight Unseen, the show is a display of young designers and this year featured some fun rug and textile work worthy of note.
Former Rhode Island School of Design student Meg Callahan makes beautiful quilts featuring intricate geometric patterns. The Haptic Lab, made up of a team of makers and designers, also make quilts and now have a new rug design called Cloud available in two colours. Katie Stout is a maker of braided rugs created in fun forms like eyes, lips and plant holders while Doug Johnston creates a number of interior products out of subtly shaded stitched cord and rope. Fashion brand Dusen Dusen, created by Ellen Van Dusen, showed a new range of interior products at SUO. Dusen loves bright geometric patterns inspired by mid-century design, Italian industrial design and Scandinavian textiles. Mimi Jung‘s woven panels and walls are stunning pieces of art. Her sculptural pieces are made of natural fibres and powder coated steel. Artist and designer Julie Thevenot launched her eponymous line of playful accessories and decorative objects in 2012. Her six foot wide piece Master wall hanging shown at SUO is made of wood, cotton thread, metallic thread. Fun and funky work was shown by Print All Over Me and Cold Picnic, who displayed a new series of rugs featuring ladies’ body parts.
