Third year students on the Product Design course at school of architecture, ETSAM (UPM), Madrid took part in a design competition in collaboration with Spanish carpet company Alfombras Veo Veo earlier this year.

Professors Miguel de Andrés and Mariano Redondo approached the company in order to establish a partnership with an industry that would benefit both the students and the business involved. And so, a contest to design a rug or carpet system that would be a valuable addition the Alfombras Veo Veo collection was launched. Five winners were announced in April, judged by a jury of 10 professionals from the field of design and education.

The panel were so impressed by the submissions that a further 5 runners up places were awarded too. The winning designers will have the opportunity to work with the company on product development, manufacturing and marketing. The project has been hailed a great success and a model for future collaborations between universities and business. Cover has noted much collaboration between artists and industry in the rug world lately. This example seems like an ideal way to support the designers of the future while gaining access to the work of the freshest design talent around.
