One futher company that will feature in COVER’s exciting FORZA TAPPETI: THE RUG REVOLUTION show in April in Milan is Jan Kath!
For the most innovative contemporary carpets look no further than Germany’s Jan Kath, a respected rug trend-setter on the international stage. Kath’s unique
designs combine the best of century-old traditions and underground cultures of today using inspiring techniques that take the ancient art of weaving and turn it on its head. Kath’s new Clown series conceived by Kyle Clarkson, his business partner in New York where Kath has recently opened his first US showroom, debuted at DOMOTEX HANNOVER in January 2012 and illustrate the designs of an unknown graffiti artist.
In a brief moment when nobody’s looking, usually in a matter of mere minutes, the walls of houses are sprayed with graffiti. People have acknowledged for a long time that, more often than not, such graffiti is an exciting work of art, a powerful expression of the zeitgeist and the mood of an entire generation – not just smears of paint. In the Clowns collection, Jan Kath has now brought the designs of an unknown graffiti artist from New York City onto carpets, raising the curtain on a new stage for street art. “I find inspiration for my carpets whenever I’m travelling around the world,” Kath explains. “I’m equally interested in century-old tradition and the underground cultures of today. And I try to bring these together. I’m fascinated by the power and determination of graffiti artists. By transforming their creations into intricate craftwork, I can make people see their art in a new light.”
