The remaining rug design favourites from this year’s print issues are ready to be discovered

Following from our Part 1 article, here are the last few favourite rug designs from our 2025 print issues, chosen by our Editor Lucy Upward and Assistant Editor Rachel Meek

Rachel Meek – Assistant Editor

‘This year, I’ve spent a lot of time appreciating the repeating patterns and forms that the natural forces of water and wind can create across sand at my local beach. This seems to have influenced my taste in rugs! I love Floor Story’s rippling, multi coloured Moire Spectrum by 2LG Studio; the more orderly mathematical refractions as seen in Azmas Rugs’ Woven Tessellations by David Mrugala; and this poetic rug which has a talismanic quality. It states ‘time and rivers don’t flow back’ and is part of the Aguagramas collection from Unknown Carpets x Patricia Claro.

‘It is always hard selecting a limited number of favourites. Having studied fine art myself, I think when choosing rugs personally I am often drawn to rugs designed by artists. I guess I love to feel there is a story behind the design. It is no surprise that three of the four rugs I chose are previous COVER front cover images. Christoph Hefti’s rugs just make me feel excited, curious and uplifted. This one, Volcano, I saw in person at the Gewerbemuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland, and I was captivated by the rug story behind it. Also really joyful and pleasing is Michelle Weinberg’s Theoretical Color 42 rug for Carini Lang. It is just beautiful in its balance of colour. I love the story behind Mirmola’s Destiny rug. The attraction is all about the symbols, the humour and the hidden message, referencing the past and today. Lastly, I think Kustaa Saksi’s Herbarium of Dreams II rug for Unknown Carpets is my ultimate favourite. When it appeared on the cover of COVER 77, I wrote ‘Dreaming of rugs’ as the coverlines, because it is my dream rug (or one version of them). I love Kustaa’s work and the craziness rendered in pink silk is just wild.’

This year has been defined by expressive colour stories, combining dynamic shades with uplifting tones – and we’re excited to see what 2026 will bring.
