Twenty rug retailers and industry figures select their favourite rug from the past twenty years. Here, Reto Aschwanden of Label STEP gives his reason for choosing a rug by Jan Kath

Reto Aschwanden of Label STEP chooses Roma Vendetta, Jan Kath

Roma Vendetta became the first contemporary rug to truly captivate me. It debuted at Domotex 2008, where it won the Carpet Design Award in the Best Modern Design category. I was immediately drawn to its fresh green-blue palette. I had often observed the seemingly irreconcilable divide between lovers of modern and traditional rugs. Jan Kath’s Erased Classic collection effortlessly and playfully bridged this gap, bringing together two distinct worlds. I also find the German design company’s ingenious method of combining design elements like Photoshop layers, thereby endlessly expanding their creative universe, incredibly clever. I strongly believe that exceptional rugs can be produced only under excellent working conditions. It is therefore unsurprising that the manufactory in Kathmandu where Roma Vendetta is crafted is also one of Nepal’s best in terms of social conditions.
