Updates from the rug world this week

Obituary, John Feizy

More than fifty years after Feizy Rugs first opened its doors in Dallas, the rug industry is mourning the passing of its founder, John Feizy. The fifth-generation member of his family to buy, sell and collect Oriental rugs, Feizy grew his small retail store into a leading wholesale supplier of rugs throughout his years in the trade, even opening the company’s own factory in Turkey. His legacy lives on through his wife, Janice, and their children, Leah and Cameron, with the latter now serving as CEO.

imm cologne and Domotex Hannover updates

imm cologne returns in January 2026 with a revamped B2B format, themed “World of Interiors,” focusing on consumer‑oriented, market-ready design trends. A new sister event, Interior Design Days Cologne, will debut in October 2025 to spotlight premium and brand‑led interiors.

DOMOTEX is set to return to Hannover from 19–22 January 2026 with an expanded focus under the banner Home of Flooring & Interior Finishing, now including tiles, wallpapers, acoustic systems and more. While exhibitor interest is strong, the Carpet Design Awards are on pause this year and should return with the biennial show in 2028.

Oriental Weavers Haptech Store

Oriental Weavers has opened the OW Haptech Store in Cairo, calling it the world’s first phygital carpet retail experience. The 250-square-meter space blends traditional retail with digital features, including virtual catalogues, interactive displays, and an AI-powered design studio. Shoppers can explore collections, customise rugs, and choose between immediate purchase or made-to-order options. The store reflects Oriental Weavers’ push toward innovation, offering a modern, tech-enabled approach to carpet shopping while highlighting Egypt’s growing role in design retail.

Turquoise Mountain at Sotheby’s London

This month, Turquoise Mountain presents Weaving Poems at Sotheby’s, an exhibition of hand-woven carpets by Afghan designer Maryam Omar and the women weavers of Bamiyan. First shown at the Design Doha Biennale, the collection draws on poetry, heritage, and the Bamiyan landscape to celebrate traditional weaving practices. The exhibition marks the first in a series of events leading up to Turquoise Mountain’s 20th anniversary, with a sister show planned for the UNESCO Cultural Centre in Bamiyan in September 2025.

Jan Kath wins the Red Dot Award

The DOTO rug by Jan Kath and his son Sanchir Kath has received the Red Dot Award 2025 for outstanding design and craftsmanship. Inspired by the movement and reflections of the ocean, DOTO blends fluid forms with iridescent tones to evoke calm and depth. Hand-knotted in Nepal using Tibetan wool, nettle, and Chinese silk, each piece is a testament to slow, meticulous making. DOTO is now on display at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen.
