I have allowed myself six favourite rugs from the last year. It was hard to whittle it down this far and I was happy that five others were already chosen by my colleagues. I chose these six for completely different reasons.
The first is the Pergamon rug, which is the central part of the Pergamon Museum‘s ongoing CulturalXCollabs project (see COVER 73). As a writer about rugs I love the fantastic story behind it and I have been lucky to have been a recipient of one of the rug fragments. The second rug is Volver Studios‘ Ocean design, which was on show in Paris for Carpet Diem in 2023. This is my favourite hand-tufted rug as I love the overall design and colour palette. The next design is Galerie Diurne’s mesmerising Jardin Moghol 3 rug, which I saw in the firm’s Paris showroom in January. It is pretty and delicate and I would love to own it. I would also like to own choice number 4, a rug from Creative Touch‘s Moroccan collection. This one is based on an emotional response, but sadly I haven’t seen the rug in the flesh! I love the quirkiness of Johanna Ulfsak‘s rugs that hand-knotted in Nepal. This design from her Whichcraft series is less quirky than others but I love the look of the starry sky. Lastly, I really covet the Impermanence rug designed by Nepalese artist Pema Rinzin for Bespoke Tibetan Carpets’ Heritage collection. His other design Wings of Joy won the Bespoke Tibetan competition that was on show in New York in September (see COVER 77) but this is my favourite from the selection.
