The postonement of Domotex 2025 was big news for the global rug industry that has long enjoyed meeting up in Hanover during January. In our new issue, COVER 77, Lucy Upward talks to Domotex’s global director Sonia Wedell-Castellano about the plans shaping up for 2026’s event. The full interview is now available to read here.
How difficult was it to make the decision to postpone Domotex Hanover 2025?
The decision was an extremely difficult one and was made in close consultation with our exhibitors and visitors. The furniture and carpet trade sectors are currently consolidating and are dependent on an evolving economic environment, which we do not anticipate improving in Europe before the third quarter of 2025. Many of our exhibitors lack the resources and time to invest in a trade fair appearance under these circumstances. Our primary objective remains to create the maximum value for exhibitors and visitors. Thus, we have decided to focus our resources and strategic efforts on Domotex 2026.
What can we expect from Domotex 2026?
Domotex 2026, scheduled for 19–22 January in Hanover, will target a broad spectrum of visitor groups, including architects, interior designers and retail and wholesale traders. It will expand its portfolio to include six new product groups: paints, wallpapers, acoustic elements, tiles, outdoor floor coverings and privacy shields and shading elements.
What will the new features include?
We plan to add new product categories that address current needs and trends in the industry, including wall design, sustainable materials and smart flooring technologies. Newly integrated segments, such as outdoor flooring, tiles, paint, wallpaper, wall and ceiling panels, acoustics, as well as shading and insect-protection solutions, will complete the portfolio, offering visitors a comprehensive overview of the industry. Flooring and carpets will continue to be a highlight, but these new product groups will place them in a broader context.
We will continue successful special themes like the Green Collection, the Stage conference (which resonated especially well with younger visitors), the Carpet Design Awards, and the Mood Spaces in the carpet section. New topics will include acoustics, and we’re especially excited about a trend show in the HU’P, located in the central Hall 18 of the exhibition grounds.
While Domotex has traditionally focused on flooring and carpets, the expanded portfolio aims to engage professionals from the wider interior finishing and design sectors, creating opportunities for cross-industry collaboration.
Will rugs still be a major part of the show?
Absolutely. Visitors can expect a rich variety of rugs, including luxurious handmade oriental carpets, innovative contemporary designs, and traditional pieces that reflect the craftsmanship of diverse cultures. The fair will highlight manufacturers and artisans from regions with strong rug-making traditions, such as India, Turkey, Iran and Central Asia, alongside exhibitors from Europe and North America. This diversity not only reinforces Domotex’s position as a global hub for rugs but also celebrates the artistry and cultural heritage of this timeless industry.
Is there a way to serve manufacturers and creative brands in one show?
Domotex 2026 is uniquely designed to bridge innovation and tradition. For manufacturers, the event provides an unparalleled opportunity to showcase their products to an international audience and explore new markets. For creative brands, it offers a space to present bold ideas and innovative designs that challenge the status quo. The inclusion of themed areas, trend zones and networking events ensures that both groups can interact meaningfully, fostering collaborations that drive innovation and business growth. This holistic approach ensures that the needs of all participants are met in a single, unified platform.
Will the Carpet Design Awards return to Domotex?
The Carpet Design Awards have long been a highlight. While details about their inclusion in 2026 are yet to be finalised, these awards hold great significance for exhibitors and visitors alike. They not only spotlight the artistic and technical excellence within the industry but also serve as an inspiration for the next generation of designers and manufacturers. Given their enduring popularity and relevance, the Carpet Design Awards are expected to remain an integral part of Domotex.
With shows like imm cancelling and BAU in Munich struggling, how does Domotex propose to succeed in a very uncertain marketplace? Domotex acknowledges the challenges of operating in an uncertain marketplace and has adapted its strategy to address these conditions. The focus on sustainability, innovation and cross-industry collaboration distinguishes it from other trade fairs. Moreover, Domotex’s strong reputation, combined with its ability to anticipate and respond to market trends, ensures its continued relevance and success even in a challenging economic climate.
Do you expect Domotex to be an annual or biennial event moving forward?
Domotex is set to transition into a biennial format starting with the 2026 event. This strategic decision provides exhibitors and visitors with more time to prepare and present groundbreaking innovations, ensuring that each edition delivers maximum impact.
The biennial schedule aligns with industry cycles, allowing the event to stay attuned to longterm trends and developments. This format provides a comprehensive and enriching experience while maintaining Domotex’s reputation as a mustattend event for the flooring and interior finishing sectors.
