There are so many ‘colour of the year’ announcements at this time of year, it is easy to think that for 2025 every colour will be ‘in’. Look a bit closer and you will see patterns in the choices. When you see the trends that fashion followed in 2024 it is easier to spot what might carry into interiors if it has not happened already. No one needs to point out that when buying a hand-knotted rug, trends don’t have to be part of the decision, investment pieces are for the longer term but that is not to say that trends don’t influencing buying. For rugs, texture and materials are a big focus at the moment but colour is what first influences that instant buying decision, an emotional response that often cannot be altered or justified. We have our favourite colours, we respond to colour depending on our mood, and our mood can change depending on so much going on in the world. Therefore, colour trends are a fascinating area to study. Currently, many colour trends suggest we are looking for safety and comfort in a world that feels out of our control. Here are five colours which look important for 2025 interior design.
Future dusk
WGSN and Coloro’s colour for 2025 is Future Dusk, which is quite an intriguing shade between purple and blue. WGSN say ‘It has a sense of mystery and escapism, and feeds into themes of transition—whether it be moving from dark to light, or dusk to dawn—making it perfect for a period of immense change. This otherworldly hue is versatile and gender-inclusive, and will be an important colour for classic styles and investment pieces.’ Seen on thew catwalk in 2023 from names such as Giorgio Armani Privé, Dior and Saint Laurent, the colour is sure to make some impact on interiors this year.
Earthy shades
Shades of brown were everywhere in fashion in 2024—see collections by Bottega Veneta and Miu Miu—and Harper’s Bazaar called chocolate brown ‘Fall’s breakout color trend’. Hues like dark green and brown are warm and comforting but they also make a statement. They are very grounding, connecting us to nature but have an elegant, sophisticated edge. English interiors brand Graham & Brown have chosen Elderton, a rich, neutral-toned brown, as the colour for 2025.
Soft blues and greens
Being such a poplar colour that is easy to use in all settings, blue is always in there somewhere in annual colour trend predictions. For 2025 cool blue and greens will offer a way of replacing neutral tones with a more classic edge. For many a cool blue is both calming and timeless. For its colour of the year 2025, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams chose Quietude, a shade of bluey green or as the company refers to it ‘A soft sage with a whisper of blue influence’.
Deep red
Red was big in fashion in 23/24 and this is having an impact on interiors into 2025. It is a strong a hue for an entire room setting, therefore, a recent trend emerging from TikTok in 2024 called ‘unexpected red theory’ offers a great concept for using red sparingly. The theory is that if you add a bit of red to a room it brings the room design together, so a red rug could be all you need. It looks like deep reds are the way to go, designer Kathy Kuo chooses ‘wine red’ as the accent we need for 2025 while California-based paint company Behr has opted for Rumors, a dark ruby.
Warm neutrals
Neutral colours are always a popular choice in interiors but recently the usual shades of beige and grey have been replaced by warmer tones such as honey, butter yellow, soft pink and light browns. These are more friendly, uplifting and warm while not being overpowering. Colour of the year for paint company Dunn-Edwards is Caramelized, a soft terracotta brown.
