The LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize has been awarded after many months of anticipation following the open call in July 2022. Now in its sixth edition, the prize celebrates unique creations that bring a contemporary edge to traditional craftsmanship.
Thirty finalists were chosen during the selection process, all of which were exceptional, and ‘Metanoia’ by Eriko Inazaki was ultimately the winner of this year’s prize. Yet for anyone with an interest in rugs and textiles, the shortlisted piece by Maina Devi will have stood out- it is so pleasing to see a rug weaver selected as a finalist for such a renowned prize. Maina was also a part of the Jaipur Rugs Foundation ‘Manchacha’ weaving project, which was featured in COVER 70.
An exhibition featuring the work of all the finalists is showing at the Noguchi Museum in New York until 18 June 2023. It presents an excellent opportunity to see Maina’s work alongside pieces by other textile artists including Tanya Aguiñiga and Jana Visser. These pieces can also be viewed in the digital exhibition.
