Five fabulous rug designs to take us into winter

As temperatures begin to drop, the warmth and texture of pile rugs have an even greater appeal. Collaborations with painters, product designers, couturiers and fibre artists, bring ever-more exciting designs to the market. Here are five fabulous rugs to take us into winter.

Hanrad x Jane Galloway

Based in Hamilton, New Zealand, rug brand Hanrad recently collaborated with local painter Jane Galloway on two wool and art-silk hand-tufted rugs based on her artworks, Crystal Palace and Colour Love (pictured).

SoFar SONear Studio Milan x Zollanvari

In the Glitch Gabbehs collection by Milan’s SoFarSoNear Studio for Zollanvari, antique gabbeh designs meet a new digital language in an eight-piece hand-knotted wool rug collection, which was released in October 2022. The walls of the Persian garden in Orchard (pictured) are glitched so that it is no longer a secret, walled space not to be viewed by outsiders. See COVER 69, out in December, for a look at the full collection.

The Rug Company x Guo Pei

There is something spectacular about Guo Pei’s new rug collection for The Rug Company. China’s most renowned couturier has created seven rugs inspired by Chinese motifs, like Tempest Day.

Wendy Morrison

Released in September 2022, the hand-knotted One Hundred Birds One Hundred Flowers rug by textile designer Wendy Morrison takes its inspiration from a pair of hanging scrolls by Japanese painter Suzuki Kiitsu.

ZigZagZurich x Liz Collins

The new machine-made Artist Carpet Collection 2022/23 by Swiss lifestyle brand ZigZagZurich is based on simple forms such as lines, squares, rectangles and scribbles. The two designs by textile artist Liz Collins include Daybreak (pictured), which looks very dynamic in bamboo silk. See a retrospective of Liz Collins’s outstanding work currently on at Touchstone Rochdale.
