Cosima von Bonin’s seventh solo show runs at Petzel Gallery, New York 16 September – 31 October 2015. CvB Singles Uptown Remix is a survey of work produced since 2000 by the Cologne-based artist, famed for her ‘deep seated mistrust of the ‘professional’ artist – the assumed expert in matters of aesthetic self importance’.
A St. Bernard (with scarfs) rests on a treasure box camouflaged as a pedestal; three oversized birds dangle from the ceiling like a grotesque mobile; a quilted Rorschach test image paraphrases Andy Warhol. The soft sculptures of pop characters, mushrooms and a fence seem familiar and comfortingly menacing: a quality that stems heavily from the use of textiles to create the works.
