Nienke Hoogvliet showed her SEA ME rug during Dutch Design Week 2014 in October. The rug is remarkably made of sea algae yarn, knotted by hand into an old fishing net. Hoogvliet is looking at materials from an eco perspective and explains: ‘A yarn made of sea algae could perhaps offer a solution for the sustainability issues in the textile industry. Sea algae grow much faster and need less nutrients then cotton for example.’
