It is perhaps bizarre to think that in prison across Britain there are male inmates passing a great deal of their stay stitching quilts, cushions, bags and gifts, but it is true and it is a fantastic endeavour. Thanks to the unique and brilliant Fine Cell Work, this social enterprise that teaches inmates needlework skills and techniques has brought meaning to the lives of many prisoners in thirty British prisons. They are not only learning new skills but the stitchers are also able to sell their own work giving them hope for a new life and some independence. On Wednesday 26 June Fine Cell Work will be holding a free exhibition and sale of recent work at 5 Frognal Gardens in Hampstead, 12-8pm.
